Film Unit

Film Unit is a professional quality independent cinema and Film society located deep within the University of Sheffield Union of Students and run entirely by volunteers, usually members of the University of Sheffield, although occasionally Alumni of the university (usually members of Film Unit as students) and Sheffield Hallam University students also make up committee and house staff. The cinema shows over 100 films a year.

It is classed within the Union as a Working Committee, as it provides a service to all students, and not merely its members (as a society does).

History

Film Unit joined the BFFS in 1950,[1] although it is likely that the Film Unit society was formed before this, and it is believed too that it pre-dates the BFFS. Film Unit also holds the copyright of a title shot in 1960, held in the University's archives.[2] There is also a title shot in 1965 by "SUSU Film Society/Film Unit".

Film Unit used to show films in the Graves Building, part of the Union building. In 1996, a new auditorium was opened, and became the new home of Film Unit;[3] it is also used as a lecture theatre.

Over the past, the members have been formed primarily from members of USIT, which folded in 2003.[4]
